Using I/9-5.50mm hook which is what red hart yarn calls for so whatever hook your yarn calls for should work but again alter to make it look the way you want it to its your blanket :-)
Starting chain: ch20 turn sc in second ch from hook and across...you should have 19 scs.
Next row: ch3 turn dc in second sc from starting chain of this round. Dc across...easy enough so far?
Next row: ch2 turn yo stick hook in first loop of the dc below pull yarn through all three for a hdc...do only three of these then comes the cluster bump...ok so fourth hole from end...(am I making sense?) yo stick your hook in yo pull through as if to do a dc yo pull through 2 loops then leave the two remaining loops on the hook tighten a little then yo and go back into the same space you did the first in and repeat until you have 6 loops on your hook (does this make sense? Feedback is crucial here so I can help you and others understand how I did this) then you want to hdc in the next dc space to secure the bump then stick your finger in it to go the way you wish it to go you can change this later if need be... Ok so hdc total of three then repeat cluster bump explained above you should end up with four bumps and three hdc at the end (the last hdc goes into the top ch of the last rounds ch and turn)
Next row: ch 3 dc in second hdc from last end of the row...dc across should have 19 dc (remember to count the ch as one dc)
Next row: same ch 3 dc second dc from previous row and dc across...
Next row: repeat the clustered row method above with 3 hdc then cluster bump all the way across ending with three hdc third on in ch from previous round.
Next row: ch 3 dc second hdc from previous round and dc across should still have 19 dcs....
Next and final round ch 1 turn sc in first dc from last round and sc across you should still have 19 stitches...at the end yo pull and cut off tail weave in loose ends on top and on the bottom of your block...congrats you finished your first block!
Now comes the adding on part that makes me the procrastinators job easier :-)
Ok so you have your next color you wish to use you join it on whichever side you wish to continue working and pull it tight so you don't confuse it as a stitch to be worked in (I did this once) ok now that its secure ch 20 then sc in second ch space and sc across then when you get back to the side of your previous square you want to slip stitch in the top of the sc or where it doesn't look too far but even with the previous block (again does this make sense?)
next row: ok so you ch3 then again you want to slip stitch into the top of the dc from your previous block where it would line up with your new block...the dc in second sc from precious round... And then dc across again check for 19 dcs
Next row ch 2 turn and hdc in first dc space then next two dcs then go back to the cluster row making sure to end with three hdc which you work into whatever space you can get your hook into because the slip stitch kinda hides the top ch of the last round just wing it you will be fine....(questions can be wrote in the comments section) sl stitch in top of the cluster row on finished block use your judgement...your doing great keep going....
Next row: ch 3 slip stitch so it lines up with the dc of the block aside from your new block then dc in second hdc from previous row and dc across again checking for 19 dcs at the end
You got this method down yet? Keep going your doing fine it may look a little funny on that edge your joining to but it will sort its self out when it's done and it will look fine in the end just don't forget to join each row with a slip stitch if you still don't got it keep reading...if you do got it scan on down to the next step building up the blanket making it taller not wider which is what this part is doing....
Next row: ch 3 dc in second dc from previous round and dc across slip stitch in top of dc of the finished block
Next row: ch 2 join at the top of the bump row of finished block hdc in first dc and repeat bump row of 3 hdc then bump pattern (yo go into fourth dc yo pull through as if to do dc but don't make one just yo pull through two hoops leaving 2 loops on your hook and yo and go back into the the same dc space yo pull through then yo and pull through two leaving 3 loops on your hook and repeat until you have 6 loops on the hook... Then yo and pull through all 6 loops then hdc in next dc space and continue same pattern of 3 hdc then one bump stitch)...
Next row: ch3 turn dc in second hdc from previous round and dc across then join top of dc in finished block ch 1 slip stitch into the top of sc of the finished block then sc in first dc space and across then yo cut tail pull through then weave in those ends...
Ok so you got the just of it you keep doing that all the way until its wide enough for the blanket you intend to make again depending on your gauge will determine how many blocks you need to build out...
Now lets talk about building up the blanket so you know what goes on there...
Building up your blanket to be taller not wider:
First row join color next to the block below so you have same colors running diagonal or do your own thing be creative it's your blanket after all...join the color to the top of the outside sc of the block below where your next block will go (so its on top of that block right make sense? If not comment below and I will try to explain better) ch 1 turn now working in sc from the block below...sc in first sc you joined into...sc across make sure you have 19 sc at the end
Next row ch 3 dc in second sc from previous row...dc across....
Pretty much same pattern here to make your first block...so blah blah blah don't want to sons like a broken record lol
So the only difference from here on out is no more chaining 20 to start your next block...nice huh? (I always have to recount my chains so frustrating) just when joining in the sc of the next block over count all the way down make sure you have 19 before you start your sc row of the next block and don't forget to join each block up the sides of the block beside it and you should make it out fine!

The picture I posted is of the pattern found on YouTube when searching for how to crochet a building block blanket...again I plan to post that video on here later if they allow embedding and someday if demand needs me to better explain how to do this one I just wrote to you I will make a video as to how to do it so you can see better...but I need feedback on that because I'm kinda talking to a wall right now with no interactions which is what keeps me motivated into doing more things like this for you my viewers...
I also included a picture of the progress of the blanket I'm making with this pattern sorry its dark and maybe grainy but I think you get the idea of the six bumps block vs the eight bump which is this pattern :-) make sense? Enjoy your blanket :-)
